14.07.07 POLO LESSON AT ASCOT PARK POLO
CLUB - A REVIEW |
The Polo training day
was a great success, and everyone participating had a good time. Having all
met up at Ascot park, our group was first sent to learn the basic shots on
crates. Barbara was quick to select a practice target, in the form of our
instructor, and Kathy's swing developed rapidly to the point of excellence.
Ponies were next. Rob was assigned to a pony called Robert. The rest of us
to the likes of "Dosy", "Cocinero" (Cook), "Mariposa" (Butterfly) and "Manolito".
Having each been assigned a pony, everyone clambered on, amid exclamations
over the number of reins, lack of padding on the saddles and general queries
as to how the ponies worked. We then set to work learning how to ride and
steer in the large arena that is regularly used for arena polo tournaments.
Matt was lucky enough to benefit from private tuition and was soon cantering
his pony around the arena. Then came the sticks and the balls and we were
finally let loose to test our newly acquired skills on horseback. And what
had all seemed so easy up until this point....
Polo riding was followed with
polo tactics and safety, and then finally came the moment that we had been
building up for all day: The chukka! We were divided into teams and sent
back to our ponies in the arena for the final clash. Cantering around after
the ball amid shouts and exclamations, ponies clashing against each other in
ride-offs and sticks waving in the air, we battled it out until the bitter
end. Finally, a little disappointed that it had all ended so quickly, we
walked over to the next field to watch the end of a higher level match been
played on grass before heading off home.
Many thanks to John Bell for
coming to watch and taking pictures of the day.
